Nigel
French is a career Hong Kong civil servant.? He has been Special Adviser
to the Education and Manpower Bureau since October 2000.? Prior to that he was
the Secretary-General of the University Grants Committee of Hong Kong (UGC)
from June 1990 to May 2000 and Special Adviser to the UGC from June to August
2000.
Mr French served as Secretary-General to the UGC throughout the period of dramatic expansion in Hong Kong’s higher education sector from 1991-1995. He also served as the Secretary of the Hong Kong Research Grants Council from its establishment in January 1991 until March 1997.
Mr French joined the Hong Kong Government as an Administrative Officer in 1973 and, prior to his appointment as Secretary-General to the UGC, held a range of appointments in different branches of the Hong Kong Civil Service.
In addition to his civil service appointment, Mr French has been associated with the Hong Kong Web Symposium for several years and is currently President of the Hong Kong Web Symposium Consortium. In this capacity, he is also Chairman of the Board of WWW10 Ltd, the company formed by the consortium of Hong Kong institutions and organisations to host WWW10.
