A bit of history

Organising an annual Web conference for the HK community was the brain-child of a small group of like-minded persons comprising Angela Castro and John Bacon-Shone of The University of Hong Kong, and Dr. Tsui Chi Ying and Professor Kenneth Smith of The Hong Kong University of Science & Technology, Dr Philip Tsang of Charles Sturt University (Australia) in late 1994.

As a result of these preliminary discussions, the first ever Web Symposium to be held in Hong Kong took place on 25 June 1995 at The University of Hong Kong and attracted a lot of interest. Shortly after this historical event, Angela and John were invited by Legislative Councillor Emily Lau to demonstrate the Internet in the Council Chamber for her Information Policy Panel members.

Following the success of the first Symposium, subsequent symposia have been held every year since then:

  • Sym 3 (1997): The University of Hong Kong, 7-10 May
  • Sym 4 (1998): The University of Hong Kong, 9-12 April
  • Sym 5 (1999): The University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong Polytechnic University, 4-6 October
  • Sym 6 (2000): City University, 8-10 June
  • Sym 7 (2001): Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, 2-3 May
  • Sym 8 (2002): OUHK's Island Learning Centre (ILC), 8 June
  • Sym 9 (2003): St. Paul's Convent School (SPCS), 6 December
  • Sym 10 (2006):The Open University of Hong Kong & St. Paul's Convent School (SPCS),  8-9, July , 2006
  • Sym 11 (2007):The Open University of Hong Kong & St. Paul's Convent School (SPCS),9-11, July, 2007
